Michaelmas

Michaelmas (pronounced /'mɪkəlməs/) or the Feast of Ss. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael is a day in the Christian calendar, taking place on 29 September. Because it falls near the equinox, it is associated with the beginning of Autumn and the shortening of days. St. Michael, one of the principal angelic warriors, was seen as a protector against the dark of night.

My church is called St.Michael's, so Michaelmas is important for us. Every year there is a church service in the evening which includes a 'procession of light', where we all go out on the streets of Camden. An arts charity called 'Rising pheonix' built a huge St. Michael and a dragon, as well as many other little lanterns and flags with children from different faiths (Jews, Muslims and Christians), which members of the congregation then carried with them during the procession. A brass band was playing and we were all singing (well, okay, I was taking pictures and only sang a little bit). Everyone on Camden's streets seemed quite interested, including the punks at the corner of Camden Road and Camden high Street.
